Yes — like any wood. Oak is harder than most local species, so it takes everyday use better than pine or poplar, but a knife, a hot pot or a dragged appliance will leave a mark. The advantage of solid wood lies elsewhere: the top can be sanded and re-oiled and it goes back to its original state. A scratched laminate or sintered stone cannot be repaired that way.

Yes, but that spot needs attention. Solid wood is not waterproof in itself — it is the finish that protects it. Spilled water has to be wiped up rather than left to dry: where moisture stays, wood darkens and can warp. The edges of the sink and hob cut-outs are sealed additionally, also underneath and inside the cut-out itself, and above a dishwasher a vapour barrier tape under the worktop is standard.

Yes, and that is normal behaviour for solid wood. The top reacts to air humidity: in winter, with the heating on, it gives off moisture and shrinks slightly; in summer it takes moisture in and swells. The movement runs mostly across the grain, that is across the width of the top. This is why the countertop is fixed to the cabinets in a way that lets it move — through elongated holes, without being rigidly glued across the whole surface.

Oil penetrates the wood and leaves a matt, natural look; local damage can be touched up spot by spot without sanding the whole surface, but the finish has to be refreshed every few months. Lacquer forms a film on the surface — it is more resistant to dirt and needs no regular care, but once it wears through or cracks, repair means sanding and re-lacquering the entire top. In a kitchen oil is chosen more often, precisely because it is easier to touch up where the wear actually happens.

An oak countertop should be oiled regularly with wood oil (every 3-6 months) and protected from prolonged contact with water. A damp cloth and a mild cleaner are enough for everyday cleaning. Properly protected, an oak countertop keeps its durability and looks for many years.
